Used Stair Lifts
Buying a used stair lift can be a good option and can save you a lot of money. However, you must be very careful before you buy a second hand stair lift and you should ask yourself, and the sellor, some basic questions before doing so. The price of a used stair lift may not seem so cheap if you can't install it or if it has some serious problems.
Before you buy the used stair lift ask how old it is. Older models of stair lifts used different drive types than new stair lifts. Modern stair lifts use rack and pinion; these have proven to be the most reliable, durable and quietest type. Older models also used rack and pinion but they also used cable, chain and worm or screw. These drive types are bulkier, less attractive and are more likely to break down.
How is the second hand stair lift powered? Older versions of stair chair lifts were powered using a main lead that was plugged into a socket. The trailing cable notonly looks unsightly but can be a potential hazard. AC mains supply can make the movement of the chair rather erratic. Modern stair chair lifts are operated by DC rechargeable batteries. You don't get a trailing cable but you do get a smoother ride. Also, today's batteries are reliable and will last a long time.
Can a straight stair lift be fitted to your stairs or do you need a curved stair lift. If you require a curved stair lift then you are strongly recommended not to buy a used stair lift. Curved stair lifts are custom made; a used curved stair lift is unlikely to fit your stairs. Even if you're looking to buy a used straight stair lift you should be wary. Many older models of stair lifts were made using steel. Modern stair lifts are made using aluminum. The use of steel for straight applications is considered old technology and certainly more difficult to re-configure for a different staircase; aluminum is not only ligthweight, it use usually easy to interchange.
All stair lifts require servicing. Will you be able to get a service plan for a used stair lift?
Most distributors aren't interested in selling used stair lifts but some specialize in selling and installing second hand stair lifts. You can find these and many private sellers on the internet.
